In my morning jog, I heard the peacock’s piercing scream, it’s long and stretched like a loud trumpet but with emotions, very distinctive. I recall hearing them last year this time, but in the densely populated residential area, how can they raise peacocks?
I’ve seen peacocks many times in the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, in Ukiah, north of San Francisco. They free roam in the temple, a lot of them, up on the tree tops, fences or in the parking lot. Sometimes I didn’t see them because they immerse into the surroundings perfectly, and suddenly they scream, and I literally jumped. That’s how I first encountered peacocks. For some reason, I gradually got used to their screaming, even longing for it, it’s like sound effects of a peaceful temple in the mountains.
I recall once, we ran into a resident who lives in the temple, I admiringly said, ” how lucky, you can see and hear these peacocks every day!” He right away answered “You mean the maniacs?” I almost fell to the ground laughing so hard, it was hilarious! Same peacock, everyone has a different lens.
