Pilgrims in Tibet

I wanted to share this story which I shared with my Yoga class yesterday, the theme was gratitude.

Many years ago, I visited Lhasa, Tibet and their downtown: Barkhor Street, like Santana row for San Jose. When we arrived there, it’s packed with vendors and full of people: tourists like us, vendors and bargainers. And the pilgrims. They are from other world, you can spot them right away, they dress poorly if not shabby, I guess from their long time on the road, and their distinctive bowing down each single step, from high mountain,  hands over head, all the way down to earth, poppy pose, literally five body cast: two hands, two knees and head on the ground and then up they go all the way up to standing high like Himalayas. Their eyes were not closed, but clearly we don’t exist in their eyes. They had a pilgrimage within, that’s why they had a peaceful, contented look and focused, oblivious to their clothing, their surroundings, onlookers like us. That look is carved into my heart: it’s not how much you have, but how much you appreciate what you have makes the difference in life.

Hope you can appreciate more whatever you’re doing, a good cup of morning coffee,  a nice smile from stranger, or beautiful fall colors….enjoy more!
