Recently I got quite an opportunity to get up early, so I got a chance to see the fresh night, the version of night I rarely got to see. Today, it was 5:00 AM when I stepped out in the yard, it was pitch dark. The neighborhood was all dark and quiet. Nighttime like this sharpens your sense of wonder; arouses your curiosity towards the surrounding world, the unknown side.
I walked to the front yard, where a few narcissus are blooming in their prime. They are different from peonies, they don’t close at night. They are like guards standing on duty or elegant ballerinas, blooming and shining their glory even at night when no audience is around. No wonder Hawaii has a beauty pageant named: Narcissus. It’s truly a resilient and elegant beauty, quiet and in solitude, not noisy or gaudy, pure and self-sufficient. What a light in Winter, shining through even in the dark night.
I’m glad I got to see the night just before the sun does, accompanied by the resilient spirits of narcissus.
